5 Health Benefits of Tea for Children

Across the globe, many families don’t let their children drink tea. This is as a result of an outdated belief that tea may be harmful to babies and children. But how true is the belief?

Over the years, there has been a debate on the benefits of tea for children but in fact, when given in safe amounts, tea has numerous healthy benefits for them. A lot of these advantages revolve around the bigger picture of health. They include:

1. Constipation relief

It’s normal for kids to experience constipation. Research has shown that drinking certain teas can give the child a relief. In this case, an oatmeal prepared with chamomile tea works best.

2. Curing a cough

Hot tea can help to reduce the symptoms of a cough. Depending on the nature of the cough, there are various tea options that can help alleviate it.

For those times when a cough comes with a sore throat, hot slippery elm tea can help soothe the child. It also helps in clearing the related congestion.

3. Nausea and anxiety

Ginger tea is a great way to treat nauseous kids. Those experiencing nausea as a result of vomiting a lot, stomach upset, or digestive issues can overcome this by drinking a cup of ginger tea. However, it’s not recommended for children under the age of 2.

Nausea also brings about dehydration which can make the situation turn worse. Safe herbal teas can be beneficial at this point as they help in keeping the body hydrated.

4. Colic

Children at times feel pain in their abdomen. Taking small amounts of peppermint, ginger, or chamomile teas can help them to recover from this uncomfortable symptom. My favorite online store for these herbal tea blends is BlendBee. They carry pretty much every tea imaginable, and have over 100 different ingredients so you can create your own, custom blends.

In some health institutions, doctors advise breastfeeding mothers to drink hot tea in order to help their children to recover from colic, through breastmilk.

Children at younger ages are also experiencing anxiety which can be associated with their experiences in school and also at home. Giving them certain teas can help to cool their nervous system and relax them.

5. Improves heart health

Research has shown that the plaque that builds up in blood vessels starts during childhood. Hot green tea reduces the resulting cholesterol levels thereby improving their heart health. Allowing this buildup on blood vessels raises their blood pressure thereby resulting in health complications especially as one becomes an adult.

Conclusion

In as much as tea has numerous health benefits, when taken in large amounts it can have negative impacts on kids. The small amounts of caffeine contained in tea can result in an addiction. It, therefore, should be restricted. Noticeably, not all teas are healthy for kids, nevertheless, there is a huge variety of teas considered safe for children. It’s best to consult your pediatrician before giving your children tea.
